Wed Nov 27 15:37:28 UTC 2024: ## Islamabad Crackdown Ends Imran Khan Protest; Four Dead, Scores Injured
**Islamabad, Pakistan –** A violent crackdown by Pakistani authorities ended a three-day protest by supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad. At least four protesters and six security personnel were killed in clashes, and over 50 others were injured. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Khan, initially claimed “hundreds” were killed.
The protest, which began Sunday, November 24th, saw PTI supporters clash with law enforcement, culminating in a midnight operation on Wednesday, November 27th, that dispersed the demonstrators from D-Chowk, a major intersection near key government buildings. Authorities used force to clear the area, leading to the reported deaths and injuries.
Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who led the march, were reportedly moved to Mansehra town after the crackdown. Approximately 450 protestors were arrested.
The PTI suspended the protest, citing government brutality and accusing the authorities of a “massacre” under a “fascist military regime.” They called for a suo moto notice from the Chief Justice and legal action against key government officials. The party shared videos and photos of the violence on social media.
Government officials, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Information Minister Atta Tarar, countered that Bibi and Gandapur fled the scene, leaving behind belongings. Tarar dismissed Khan’s call for protest as a “missed call.” Naqvi alleged the discovery of documents outlining a plan to attack government buildings.
Roads in Islamabad and surrounding areas have since reopened, and cleaning efforts are underway. The protest caused significant disruption to air travel, with flight cancellations and delays. The Pakistan Stock Exchange, which had previously crashed, saw a significant recovery following the end of the demonstrations. The situation remains tense, with the PTI announcing future plans contingent on Khan’s directives.
