Wed Nov 27 09:01:10 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Delay Sparks Political Tension
**Mumbai, India** – Four days after the Mahayuti alliance secured a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the selection of the next Chief Minister remains unresolved, causing rising political tension. While the BJP, with 132 seats, is pushing for its leader Devendra Fadnavis, its ally, the Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, is advocating for Shinde himself.
The BJP’s insistence on Fadnavis, supported by its ideological parent, the RSS, and the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP, is causing friction within the alliance. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale publicly stated that Shinde was unhappy with the BJP’s apparent decision to choose Fadnavis, highlighting the deadlock within the Mahayuti. Shiv Sena leaders, however, are emphasizing Shinde’s crucial role in the victory, citing the “Bihar model” as precedent for a coalition partner leading the government. They point to Shinde’s leadership and the sacrifices made during the 2022 power struggle.
The delay is drawing sharp criticism from the opposition. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray has taunted Shinde, while party MP Priyanka Chaturvedi urged the BJP to swiftly announce its decision. Sanjay Raut, another Sena (UBT) leader, dismissed the election results as a mandate of EVMs, not the people.
Despite the apparent impasse, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske insisted that the Mahayuti remains united, attributing the delay to the normal processes of government formation. He dismissed the speculation as media impatience. The allocation of ministerial berths also remains a point of negotiation between the BJP and its allies. The BJP is expected to secure roughly half of the 43 ministerial positions.
The situation contrasts sharply with the 2022 scenario where the BJP, despite its numerical advantage, supported Shinde’s ascension to the Chief Minister’s post. This time, however, the BJP’s strong showing in the polls appears to give it the upper hand in negotiations. The coming days will be crucial in determining the state’s next leader.
