**Ranchi, Jharkhand –** The recently concluded Jharkhand Assembly elections saw a decisive role played by women voters, with targeted welfare schemes proving pivotal in the INDIA coalition’s victory. A Lokniti-CSDS analysis reveals that while both the INDIA and NDA coalitions implemented women-centric schemes, the INDIA coalition’s strategy proved more effective.
The INDIA coalition’s “Maiyya Samman” scheme, initially offering ₹1,000 monthly payments to women, saw a 66% registration rate. Crucially, 47% of households with registered women voted for the INDIA coalition. Following the BJP’s launch of its competing “Gogo Didi” scheme (promising ₹2,100 monthly), the INDIA coalition increased its payment to ₹2,500. While the BJP’s scheme boosted its vote share among those registered, the INDIA coalition maintained a stronger overall advantage among women.
The data shows that while men and women showed equal support for the BJP (38%), the INDIA coalition secured 45% of the women’s vote compared to 43% of the men’s vote. This advantage was particularly pronounced in rural and Adivasi communities, where nearly half (48%) of rural women and 60% of Adivasi women voted for the INDIA coalition. The BJP’s Gogo Didi scheme, while effective, performed better in urban areas and among non-tribal women.
The analysis concludes that the INDIA coalition’s focus on rural and tribal women, coupled with its welfare schemes, played a decisive role in their electoral success. The Jharkhand election results underscore the growing political influence of women voters and the effectiveness of targeted welfare policies in swaying electoral outcomes.
