**Jeddah, Saudi Arabia** – Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 13-year-old cricketing sensation from Bihar, India, has made history by becoming the youngest player ever sold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. The Rajasthan Royals secured the teenage batsman for a staggering ₹1.10 crore (approximately $133,000 USD) after a fierce bidding war with the Delhi Capitals.
Suryavanshi’s meteoric rise has captivated the cricketing world. He recently set a new record for the fastest century by an Indian in Under-19 Tests, achieving the feat in just 58 balls against Australia. This performance followed his debut in first-class cricket at the remarkably young age of 12, making him the fourth youngest Indian to ever play Ranji Trophy.
The young batsman’s impressive performances throughout 2023, including a 151-run innings in the Cooch Behar Trophy, solidified his place as a rising star. He will now have the opportunity to hone his skills under the guidance of Rajasthan Royals head coach, Rahul Dravid.
Suryavanshi’s father, Sanjeev, expressed immense pride, highlighting his son’s dedication and the sacrifices made by the family to support his cricketing ambitions. He revealed that the family even sold land to fund Vaibhav’s training and travel to tournaments.
“He is not just my son now but the whole of Bihar’s son,” Sanjeev told PTI. “He has worked hard. At the age of eight, he excelled at U-16 district trials.”
The Rajasthan Royals were clearly impressed with Suryavanshi’s talent, as evidenced by his performance during trials in Nagpur where he showcased his explosive batting style.
This unprecedented sale marks a significant moment in IPL history and promises an exciting future for this exceptionally talented young cricketer. His journey underscores the immense potential of young Indian talent and the growing global interest in the sport.
