Mon Nov 25 22:59:12 UTC 2024: ## Controversial Premiere of “Rust” at Camerimage Film Festival Amidst Boycott and Backlash

**Toruń, Poland** – The world premiere of the controversial Western “Rust” took place at the Camerimage International Film Festival, overshadowed by a significant boycott and a separate sexism row engulfing the festival itself. The film, whose production was tragically marked by the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins by Alec Baldwin, was screened as a tribute to Hutchins. The closing credits now include a dedication to her.

While the screening was introduced by director Joel Souza (who was also injured in the incident) and replacement cinematographer Bianca Cline, the event was met with mixed reactions, described as “subdued” and “polite” by various media outlets. Baldwin, credited as a producer, was not invited.

The premiere sparked significant controversy. Prominent cinematographers, including Rachel Morrison, voiced their objections to the film’s screening, arguing that it shouldn’t be promoted despite its aim to memorialize Hutchins. Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, who is pursuing a civil lawsuit against Baldwin, also boycotted the event, citing Baldwin’s refusal to take full responsibility.

Director Souza defended the screening, stating that it was intended to honor Hutchins and showcase her work. He also revealed that completing the film was a difficult decision, made partly to support Hutchins’ family financially, per a settlement agreement.

Adding to the controversy, the festival itself faced a major backlash over an article published by CEO Marek Żydowicz, which was widely criticized as misogynistic for its comments on the increasing prominence of women in the film industry. This led to several high-profile filmmakers, including Steve McQueen and Coralie Fargeat, withdrawing their films from the festival. Despite the criticism, head jury member Cate Blanchett remained, and the festival is attempting to address concerns through dialogue with various industry organizations. The Camerimage festival continues until November 23rd.
