**Bengaluru, November 26, 2024** – The Karnataka government has decided to delay the implementation of a University Grants Commission (UGC) order allowing students to pursue two academic programs simultaneously. The decision follows a recent UGC reminder urging the state to comply with its 2022 directive, which was part of the National Education Policy 2020.
Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar stated that the government considers the UGC guidelines “impractical and unrealistic.” The matter has been referred to the State Education Policy (SEP) Commission for review, with a final decision expected by February 2025.
The UGC’s November 2024 reminder highlighted challenges faced by students in enrolling in dual degree programs, citing difficulties with migration certificate requirements imposed by higher educational institutions (HEIs). The UGC expressed displeasure over the lack of implementation, noting that the policy’s aim is being undermined.
This decision comes after the Congress government in Karnataka reversed several aspects of the National Education Policy 2020 implemented by the previous BJP administration, including the four-year honours degree program. The state’s decision to refer the UGC order to the SEP Commission effectively stalls the implementation of the dual degree program for the foreseeable future.
