**Cape Coral, FL –** A popular TikTok influencer, Marlena Velez (22), has been arrested and charged with petty theft after allegedly shoplifting over $500 worth of merchandise from a local Target store. Velez, who boasts over 300,000 followers on the social media platform, was identified through a combination of security footage and a tip from a follower who recognized her in a video showcasing the stolen items.
On October 30th, Velez is accused of stealing 16 items, including clothing and household goods, using a fake barcode at a self-checkout kiosk. Target’s loss prevention team alerted the Cape Coral Police Department, who subsequently released images of the suspect to the public via social media.
A key break in the case came when an anonymous tipster, identifying themselves as one of Velez’s followers, linked the suspect’s Instagram account to her TikTok profile. Further investigation revealed a now-deleted “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) video on Velez’s TikTok account. This video showed her wearing the same outfit and glasses as seen in the Target security footage while displaying items consistent with those reported stolen.
“She essentially incriminated herself,” stated Officer Riley Carter, spokesperson for the Cape Coral Police Department. Carter added that social media provided an unexpected lead, significantly expediting the identification and arrest.
Velez was arrested on Thursday and charged with one count of petit theft. Authorities also discovered she has a prior criminal record. The case highlights the unforeseen consequences of flaunting stolen goods on social media platforms.
