**Mumbai, [Date]** – The ruling alliance in Maharashtra has secured a resounding victory in the recent assembly elections, a result largely attributed to the success of the Eknath Shinde government’s welfare programs and, significantly, a fractured Muslim vote. The alliance secured 22 out of 38 seats where the Muslim population exceeds 20%, a crucial factor in their overall win. This contrasts sharply with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which won only 13 of these seats.
The split in the Muslim vote dealt a significant blow to the Congress, reducing its seats from 11 to 5. The Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena won 6 seats, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction secured only 2. The BJP increased its tally from 11 in 2019 to 14, while Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction won 6 and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction won 2. The remaining three seats were divided between the Samajwadi Party (2) and AIMIM (1).
BJP leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe attributed the victory to the party’s focus on development, rejecting opposition claims of polarization. He emphasized the party’s inclusive slogan, “Ek hain toh safe hain” (If we are one, we are safe). This sentiment was echoed by Salim Sarang, president of the Muslim Welfare Association, who stated that voters prioritized development over appeasement politics.
However, the election also saw the defeat of prominent Muslim figures, including NCP’s Nawab Malik and Zeeshan Siddiqui, and Congress’s Arif Naseem Khan. Analysts suggest that low voter enthusiasm, divided votes, and communal polarization in several constituencies contributed to the MVA’s setbacks. Several instances highlighted the impact of vote-splitting, such as Aurangabad East, where the division of Muslim votes among multiple candidates led to the BJP’s victory. Even in Malegaon Central, a Muslim-dominated area, AIMIM’s victory was secured by a narrow margin of just 162 votes. Similarly, in Bhiwandi West, the BJP candidate won by a significant margin due to fractured Muslim support.
The results suggest that while Muslim support significantly boosted the MVA’s performance in the May Lok Sabha elections, a combination of factors led to a vastly different outcome in the Assembly polls.
