**Mumbai, India –** The Maharashtra Mahayuti coalition’s resounding victory in the recent state assembly elections, securing 230 out of 288 seats, has ignited a debate over the next chief minister. While the BJP, with 132 seats, emerged as the single largest party, calls for both current Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take the helm are emerging from within the coalition.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Naresh Mhaske invoked the Bihar model, advocating for Shinde’s continuation, citing the BJP’s decision to support Nitish Kumar despite having fewer seats. Mhaske highlighted Shinde’s popularity and the alliance’s success under his leadership. He further emphasized the pre-election campaign being led by Shinde, Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar, arguing for respecting the established leadership structure.
However, BJP MLC Pravin Darekar strongly backed Fadnavis, emphasizing his administrative capabilities and deep understanding of Maharashtra’s needs. Darekar asserted that the public mandate favored Fadnavis and highlighted his role in maintaining coalition unity during the elections. He claimed even the Mantralaya administration prefers Fadnavis as the next CM.
Further fueling the speculation, BJP leader Raosaheb Danve indicated that the party would soon convene a meeting of its legislators to discuss the matter before conveying their decision to the central leadership. While both Fadnavis and state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule have publicly downplayed any conflict, stating the decision will be made collaboratively within the Mahayuti, the conflicting statements highlight the ongoing internal negotiations within the ruling coalition. The final decision remains pending, with the future leadership of Maharashtra still uncertain.
