Tue Nov 26 14:43:03 UTC 2024: ## Violent Clashes Erupt in Islamabad as Khan Supporters Storm Capital

**ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN** – At least four Pakistani security officers were killed Tuesday as thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan breached government barricades and clashed violently with law enforcement in Islamabad. The protests, demanding Khan’s release from prison and the resignation of the current government, escalated into a major confrontation.

The Interior Ministry reported that protesters in vehicles deliberately ran over paramilitary officers, prompting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to condemn the actions as “extremism,” not a peaceful demonstration. Demonstrators overcame roadblocks, leading to widespread chaos in the capital. One Islamabad resident described the city as a “battlefield,” with schools and markets closed for days due to the unrest.

The march, led by Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi and a key aide, targeted the Red Zone, home to vital government buildings and embassies. Despite calls for a peaceful protest, clashes erupted as authorities responded with tear gas. The government had attempted to prevent the march, deploying tear gas earlier and arresting over 4,000 Khan supporters. Internet and mobile services were also suspended in some areas. While negotiations took place between some PTI leaders and the government, an offer of a designated protest area was rejected.

Khan, imprisoned for over a year on charges his party deems politically motivated, remains a popular figure. His supporters cite rigged elections as a reason for their demands. The government insists only the courts can decide on his release. The army has been deployed to reinforce security in the Red Zone amid growing concerns. The events highlight the deeply polarized political climate in Pakistan.
