Tue Nov 26 01:23:56 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra Coalition Government Formation Faces Uncertainty Amidst Chief Minister Dispute
**Mumbai, November 25, 2024** – The formation of the new Maharashtra government following the recent assembly elections is facing a deadlock over the Chief Minister’s position. While the BJP, the largest party in the Mahayuti alliance, is pushing for Devendra Fadnavis, pressure is mounting to appoint Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske advocated for a Bihar-style arrangement, where the Chief Minister’s post is given to a smaller party within the coalition, despite the BJP’s majority. He highlighted Shinde’s role in the previous government and his contribution to the Mahayuti’s electoral success. This sentiment is echoed by other Shiv Sena leaders who emphasize Shinde’s broad appeal across the state. Sources within the Shiv Sena suggest a potential power-sharing agreement where Shinde serves as CM for a limited term.
However, the BJP firmly rejects any compromise, citing their substantial majority and past concessions. Party leaders insist on Fadnavis as the Chief Minister, pointing to his role in the BJP’s landslide victory. Meanwhile, NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who has pledged his support to Fadnavis, stated that a final decision on the Chief Minister will be made jointly by the alliance leaders.
Adding to the complexity, Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil threatened protests if Fadnavis is appointed. Simultaneously, prayers were offered at several prominent temples across the state for Shinde’s appointment.
While the BJP has yet to hold its MLA meeting, the Shiv Sena and NCP have already named their legislature party leaders. Uddhav Thackeray’s faction of the Shiv Sena appointed Aaditya Thackeray as the leader of both houses. Thackeray also demanded a re-election using ballot papers, alleging irregularities in the electronic voting machines. In a separate incident, Ajit Pawar subtly criticized his nephew Rohit Pawar for his narrow victory margin.
The situation remains fluid, with the final decision expected soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are expected to be present at the swearing-in ceremony.
