Mon Nov 25 17:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra Coalition Government Formation Delayed Amidst Chief Minister Speculation
**Mumbai, November 25, 2024** – The formation of the new Maharashtra government, following the Mahayuti coalition’s landslide victory in the recent Assembly elections, is facing delays despite the Election Commission submitting the election results to the Governor on Sunday. While the Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, secured 230 out of 288 seats, discussions regarding the Chief Minister’s position and power-sharing arrangements are ongoing.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that negotiations between coalition partners are underway to finalize a formula for the government’s structure. Sources within the BJP indicate that a decision will only be made after consultation with a BJP-appointed central observer. Speculation is rife, with various factions putting forward their preferred candidates.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske advocated for Eknath Shinde to become Chief Minister, drawing a parallel to Bihar’s political scenario. However, the BJP, emphasizing its substantial mandate, is reportedly pushing for its own candidate, likely Devendra Fadnavis, who currently holds the Deputy Chief Minister’s post. BJP MLC Pravin Darekar openly supported Fadnavis, highlighting his capabilities.
Meanwhile, the Congress, which suffered a significant defeat, is grappling with the aftermath. State Congress chief Nana Patole dismissed rumors of his resignation, emphasizing collective responsibility for the loss. The party also demanded action against IPS officer Rashmi Shukla for allegedly violating the model code of conduct.
The Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena elected Aaditya Thackeray as its legislature party leader and Bhaskar Jadhav as its leader in the Legislative Assembly. Jadhav hinted at the MVA’s intention to demand the Leader of the Opposition post once the government is formed, criticizing the Mahayuti’s victory as not reflecting public sentiment.
Adding to the post-election drama, Sanjay Raut of the Uddhav Thackeray faction demanded a recount using ballot papers, alleging EVM irregularities. Furthermore, a Congress rebel, Manoj Shinde, joined the Shiv Sena, citing marginalization within the Congress.
The election results themselves revealed that 58 candidates lost despite securing over one lakh votes, highlighting the intense competition. Ajit Pawar even suggested that the absence of campaigning by his nephew, Rohit Pawar, in his constituency almost cost him the election. The next few days promise to be crucial as Maharashtra awaits the announcement of its new Chief Minister.
