Tue Nov 26 11:24:27 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra’s Ruling Coalition Delays Chief Minister Announcement Amidst Speculation
**Mumbai, November 26, 2024** – Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde submitted his resignation on Tuesday, concluding the current Assembly’s term. Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan accepted the resignation but appointed Mr. Shinde as caretaker Chief Minister until a new government is formed. This follows a landslide victory for the Mahayuti coalition (BJP, Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP) in the recent Assembly elections, securing 230 out of 288 seats.
Despite the clear majority, the coalition has yet to decide on a Chief Minister, leading to a three-day impasse and sparking intense speculation. While Mr. Shinde’s supporters advocate for his continued leadership, the BJP is reportedly pushing for Devendra Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP is negotiating for key ministerial portfolios. Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske stated that a Mahayuti leader will ultimately be chosen. However, Congress President Nana Patole criticized the delay, accusing the BJP of prioritizing corporate interests over the people of Maharashtra.
Adding to the uncertainty, a late-night appeal from Mr. Shinde on X urged his supporters to avoid large gatherings in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena Minister Deepak Kesarkar emphasized that the final decision rests with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, a sentiment echoed by Mr. Shinde himself.
The delay has also seen allegations of electoral irregularities surface. MNS candidate Rajesh Gangaram Yerunkar accused irregularities concerning EVM seals and battery levels, claims the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) swiftly refuted in an official statement, citing matching figures and referencing Election Commission FAQs.
The ongoing negotiations are expected to continue, with a BJP meeting to elect their legislative leader scheduled for Wednesday. Following this, discussions among Mr. Shinde, Mr. Fadnavis, and Mr. Pawar will determine the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
