Mon Nov 25 20:45:00 UTC 2024: **BJP’s Hindutva Appeal Falls Short in Jharkhand Assembly Elections**

Ranchi, Jharkhand – Despite attempts to capitalize on anti-incumbency and mobilize Hindu voters, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to secure a majority in the recently concluded Jharkhand Assembly elections. While the BJP employed strategies including promises of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), focus on “Bangladeshi infiltrators,” and use of slogans like “Batenge toh katenge” and references to “Love Jihad,” these tactics yielded limited success.

According to a Lokniti-CSDS survey, a significant portion of voters (40%) were aware of the BJP’s UCC promise, and among them, the BJP enjoyed a stronger lead. Similarly, over 40% agreed with the BJP’s claim of better handling the “Bangladeshi infiltrator” issue, resulting in increased support for the party among this group. However, these efforts to mobilize voters based on Hindutva messaging ultimately fell short of securing a majority victory for the BJP. The party managed to retain a substantial vote share despite its loss, possibly attributable to the aforementioned strategies. The results highlight the complex electoral dynamics in Jharkhand, indicating that while these issues resonated with a segment of voters, they were insufficient to overcome the incumbent Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s hold on power.
