**Hyderabad, November 26, 2024** – The Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering & Telecommunications (IRISET) has launched a new ₹41.11 crore Centre of Excellence (CoE) for its indigenous automatic train protection system, Kavach. This initiative also includes a ₹28.46 crore testing facility for 5G technology, developed in collaboration with IIT-Chennai. The CoE, operational from the Secunderabad training facility, has already produced training manuals and installation guidelines for Kavach, focusing on improved safety and interoperability.

The centre has developed a standardized “Uniform Braking Algorithm” for Kavach, addressing varied operating conditions across different manufacturers. It has also finalized standard installation drawings for various locomotives and secured approval from the Research Design & Standards Organisation for its direct loco-to-loco communication system. IRISET is actively analyzing field incidents to refine Kavach’s performance, having addressed over eight critical issues.

To promote Kavach expertise, IRISET has partnered with nine colleges to offer open electives and certification courses in railway signalling and Kavach technology for B.Tech students. In 2024 alone, over 1,891 railway personnel have received Kavach training through various programs. IRISET Director-General Sharad Kumar Srivastava highlighted the institute’s commitment to Kavach, emphasizing its status as a flagship program.
