**Mumbai, November 26, 2024** – Shashi Ruia, co-founder of the Essar Group, passed away on November 25 at the age of 80 following a prolonged illness. Mr. Ruia, a first-generation entrepreneur, returned to India about a month ago after receiving treatment in the U.S.
Along with his brother Ravi, Mr. Ruia established Essar in 1969, starting with the construction of an outer breakwater at Chennai Port. The conglomerate grew to encompass diverse sectors, including steel, oil refining, exploration and production, telecom, power, and construction. His career began in 1965 under the guidance of his father.
Mr. Ruia’s passing was mourned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described him on X (formerly Twitter) as a “colossal figure in the world of industry” whose “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence transformed the business landscape of India.” The Prime Minister extended his condolences to Mr. Ruia’s family.
A public viewing will be held at Ruia House from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by a funeral procession to the Hindu Worli Crematorium at 4 p.m. Mr. Ruia is survived by his wife Manju and two sons, Prashant and Anshuman.
