**Vilnius, Lithuania –** A DHL cargo plane crashed into a house near Vilnius, Lithuania on Monday morning, killing at least one person and injuring another. The Boeing 737, a 31-year-old aircraft operated by Swiftair, a Madrid-based contractor for DHL, was arriving from Leipzig, Germany, and crashed approximately 1.5 kilometers short of the runway at Vilnius Airport.
According to Lithuanian Police Commissioner-General Renatas Požėla, the plane skidded for several hundred meters after crashing, partially impacting a residential house. While the house sustained minor damage, a fire broke out in the surrounding area. Emergency services responded swiftly, evacuating residents and transporting two individuals to the hospital; one later succumbed to their injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are exploring various possibilities, including the possibility that weather conditions, which included freezing temperatures, pre-sunrise cloud cover, and winds around 30 kph, may have been a contributing factor. The aircraft’s age, while not unusual for cargo planes, is also being considered in the investigation.
DHL and Swiftair have yet to issue official statements. The Lithuanian airport authority confirmed the incident via social media and reported that emergency services, including fire crews, were on the scene. Flight tracking data suggests the plane made a turn to align for landing before the crash.
