Tue Nov 26 05:08:59 UTC 2024: ## India Celebrates Constitution Day, Remembering Ambedkar’s Legacy

**NEW DELHI, INDIA – November 26, 2024** – India observed Constitution Day today, commemorating the adoption of its Constitution on January 26, 1950. The day serves as a reminder of the monumental effort undertaken by the Constituent Assembly, led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, to craft the legal framework governing the nation.

The Constitution, comprising 448 articles, 25 parts, 12 schedules, 5 appendices, and 98 amendments, was finalized after extensive deliberations. The Constituent Assembly, formed following the Cabinet Mission’s visit in 1946, included 389 members, 93 of whom were representatives of princely states. Dr. Rajendra Prasad served as the Assembly’s president, while Dr. B.R. Ambedkar chaired the drafting committee.

This year’s Constitution Day emphasizes the importance of understanding the constitutional values of freedom, equality, and fraternity. Schools and government offices across the country held events to educate citizens about the Constitution’s significance and its role in securing the nation’s democratic principles. The day also serves to remember the contributions of the 284 members of the drafting committee, including 15 women.

Celebrated since 2015, Constitution Day, also known as *Samvidhan Divas*, has replaced the previous observation as Law Day. The shift aims to enhance public awareness about the Constitution and its ongoing relevance in a modern India. Dr. Ambedkar’s powerful quotes, emphasizing social justice and the importance of strong leadership in upholding constitutional ideals, were widely shared, underscoring the enduring legacy of the Constitution and its architect.
