Tue Nov 26 11:49:55 UTC 2024: ## India Celebrates Constitution Day

**New Delhi, November 26, 2024** – India commemorated Constitution Day today, marking the anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. While the Constitution officially came into effect on January 26, 1950, (celebrated as Republic Day), November 26th holds significant importance as the day the foundational document was finalized after extensive discussions and revisions.

Initially observed as National Law Day, Constitution Day has been celebrated annually since 2015, a testament to the document’s enduring significance. The drafting of the Constitution took two years, eleven months, and eighteen days. The two-month gap between its adoption and enforcement was utilized for translation and dissemination to the public.

The day also honors Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution and India’s first Law Minister. His vision, reflected in the Constitution’s preamble, ensured equality, liberty, and justice for all citizens.

India’s Constitution is notable for several reasons: it is the world’s longest written constitution, initially comprising 395 articles, 12 schedules, and 22 parts (since amended); it establishes India as a democratic republic; and it guarantees equal rights to all citizens regardless of religion, caste, gender, or region. It also enshrines India’s secular nature and its federal structure, dividing power between the central and state governments.

The Ministry of Social Justice decided in 2015 to officially recognize November 26th as Constitution Day to promote awareness of the Constitution and its values among the citizens. Constitution Day is not merely a date, but a reminder of the fundamental principles upon which the nation is built, a document that grants rights while reminding citizens of their responsibilities.
