**New Delhi, November 26, 2024** – India launched a year-long celebration commemorating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution. President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the festivities with a joint address to both Houses of Parliament, highlighting the Constitution’s evolution and its continued relevance. She specifically acknowledged the contributions of women in its creation and lauded recent governmental initiatives like the Goods and Services Tax and the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. The President emphasized the Constitution as a “live, progressive document” that continues to empower citizens.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, in his address, underscored the importance of preserving the sanctity of democratic institutions, referencing the Emergency period as a stark reminder of the fragility of fundamental rights. He stressed the need for constructive dialogue and debate to strengthen Indian democracy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated in the celebrations, attending an event at the Supreme Court where he released the annual report of the Indian Judiciary (2023-24). A new website, constitution75.com, was launched to engage citizens with the Constitution’s legacy. The government also released a commemorative coin and stamp to mark the occasion.
Various political leaders offered their perspectives. Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded the Constitution’s role in fostering national unity and integrity. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge urged citizens to actively protect the Constitution’s ethos. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury (in excerpts from a 2015 speech) provided historical context, emphasizing the Constitution’s roots in India’s long struggle for independence.
The celebrations began in the historic Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan (formerly the old Parliament House), the same location where the Constituent Assembly first met in 1946. The event served as a testament to India’s commitment to its foundational document and its ongoing journey as a democratic nation.
