Tue Nov 26 05:34:49 UTC 2024: ## India Celebrates 75th Constitution Day

**NEW DELHI** – India commemorated the 75th anniversary of its Constitution’s adoption on November 26th. The Constitution, the world’s longest written constitution, was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949 and came into effect on January 26th, 1950, a date chosen to mark the 1930 declaration of Purna Swaraj (complete independence) by the Indian National Congress.

November 26th was declared Constitution Day in 2015, coinciding with the 125th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution. The day is also observed as National Law Day.

The drafting of the Constitution took 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days. Prem Behari Narain Raizada, a calligraphy expert, meticulously hand-wrote the original copy in italic script without accepting any payment. The original, written on durable parchment sheets, is preserved in a helium-filled container with naphthalene balls in the Parliament Library in Delhi. A Hindi version was penned by Vasant Krishan Vaidya. The total cost of creating the Constitution was ₹64 lakhs.

In addition to celebrating the Constitution, the event highlighted several trivia questions related to Indian constitutional history, including details about key figures, committees, fundamental rights, and important legislation. The questions touched upon topics ranging from the first Minister of Human Resources to the source of fundamental duties in the Constitution.
