Tue Nov 26 07:37:27 UTC 2024: ## India Celebrates Constitution Day

**New Delhi, November 26** – India is observing Constitution Day today, commemorating the adoption of its Constitution on November 26, 1949, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. The day, previously observed as Law Day, was designated as Constitution Day in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

The Constitution, a meticulously crafted document containing 395 articles, 22 parts, and 12 schedules, took two years, eleven months, and seventeen days to complete. Handwritten in English and Hindi by Prem Behari Narain Raizada, with artwork by Nandalal Bose and artists from Santiniketan, the original manuscript is preserved in a helium-filled case in the Parliament Library.

Dr. Ambedkar, the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, played a pivotal role in its creation. He famously described the Constitution not merely as a legal document, but as a vehicle of life, its spirit ever reflecting the ethos of the age. The Constitution’s key features include its blend of rigidity and flexibility, and its foundational structure, which cannot be altered. It also enshrines fundamental rights and duties for all citizens.

The celebration of Constitution Day aims to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of constitutional values and the responsibilities that come with them. The event highlights the monumental contribution of Dr. Ambedkar and the Constituent Assembly, which first convened on December 9, 1946, with Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha as its temporary president.
