**Chennai, Tamil Nadu –** The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in three central Tamil Nadu districts on November 26th, and two districts on November 27th. A yellow alert is in effect for Chennai from November 27th to 29th, with neighboring districts under yellow and orange alerts through November 30th.

A depression in the Bay of Bengal, currently 740 km south-southeast of Nagapattinam, is expected to intensify into a deep depression within 12 hours and move towards the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts over the next two days. Schools and colleges have been declared closed in several Delta districts, including Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur, in anticipation of severe weather starting November 26th.

The IMD forecasts moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in Chennai and its suburbs on Tuesday, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 30°C. While Tamil Nadu has experienced a slight rainfall deficit since October 1st, coastal districts are expected to be most affected by the approaching system. The rainfall is expected to shift inland if the system moves further north.
