Tue Nov 26 12:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Indian Cabinet Waives Bank Guarantees for Telecom Operators, Boosting Vodafone Idea
**Mumbai, India** – The Indian Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to waive bank guarantees for telecom operators on spectrum acquired before 2022, providing significant relief to the struggling sector. This move is expected to particularly benefit Vodafone Idea, which faced a substantial financial burden from these guarantees.
Vodafone Idea, India’s third-largest telco, had previously indicated that the requirement for bank guarantees hindered its ability to raise funds for crucial network upgrades and 5G rollout. The company had to submit nearly ₹24,700 crore in bank guarantees. While the Cabinet’s approval comes with conditions – operators with guarantees below the prorated spectrum value must pay the difference – the waiver is a major step towards easing the financial strain on the industry.
The decision was welcomed by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which stated that it will enhance cash flow, free up capital for investment, and facilitate network expansion and technological improvements. Industry analysts agree, predicting that the move will enable telcos to accelerate 5G deployments and improve overall network infrastructure. This, in turn, is expected to benefit consumers through improved connectivity and access to advanced technologies.
Vodafone Idea’s stock price surged 16% in early trading following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s improved financial outlook. The company plans to launch 5G services next month and has a substantial capex plan for network upgrades over the next three years.
Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telco, will also benefit from the waiver, though the impact will be less significant than for Vodafone Idea. The government’s decision follows previous requests from telecom operators who argued that the bank guarantee requirement hampered investment in network infrastructure and hindered the government’s goal of expanding broadband access across India. The move is seen as a key step towards a more stable and competitive telecom landscape in India.
