Mon Nov 25 18:03:12 UTC 2024: ## Eight Migrants Dead, Including Six Children, in Samos Shipwreck

**SAMOS, GREECE** – A devastating migrant shipwreck off the Greek island of Samos has claimed the lives of eight people, including six children, Greek authorities announced Monday. The coast guard discovered the bodies of the victims after receiving an alert from a non-governmental organization. Thirty-six survivors were found alive on the northern part of Samos, while three others trapped in a rocky area were rescued by coast guard officers. An estimated 50 people were aboard the vessel, though it remains unclear if anyone else is missing. The nationalities of the victims and survivors are currently unknown.

This tragedy marks the second fatal migrant shipwreck in the Aegean Sea this month. Earlier in November, four people died in a similar incident near Rhodes, and two perished in a Samos shipwreck in late October. In a separate incident on Lesbos, an elderly migrant died after a small boat carrying 27 people made landfall.

Greek Shipping Minister Christos Stylianides expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, highlighting the need to dismantle human trafficking networks responsible for the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants. He stated that Greece’s priority is to address the “illegal immigration problem which has exceeded the limits of endurance of the European Union.” The incident underscores the ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting to reach Europe via the Aegean Sea. The UNHCR reported approximately 54,000 migrants reached Greece in 2024, highlighting the persistent flow of migration despite the risks.
