Tue Nov 26 00:58:16 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra Coalition Spars Over Chief Minister Post; Shinde Demands “Bihar Model”
**Mumbai, [Date]** – While BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is reportedly set to become Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister, with Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar as his deputies, intra-coalition tensions are rising. The Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena is demanding that the “Bihar model” be adopted, arguing that Eknath Shinde, despite the BJP securing more seats, should be appointed Chief Minister.
Sources within the BJP claim Fadnavis’s appointment has been approved by alliance partners, but the Shinde Sena denies this, stating no consultation occurred. The “Bihar model” refers to the 2020 Bihar election where Nitish Kumar of the JD(U) became Chief Minister despite the BJP winning more seats.
Shinde’s supporters argue his leadership during the election campaign and his popularity warrant his continued role as Chief Minister. They point to pre-poll surveys showing him as the most popular CM candidate and emphasize his crucial role in consolidating Maratha support and maintaining “Marathi pride.” Furthermore, they warn that replacing Shinde would destabilize the government and hurt the Mahayuti’s chances in upcoming local body elections.
The Shinde faction also fears that sidelining him would embolden the rival UBT faction of the Shiv Sena and the MVA, potentially triggering a “Gujarat vs. Maharashtra” conflict within the government.
While a cabinet-sharing formula has reportedly been finalized—allocating 12 berths to the Shinde Sena, 10 to the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, and the remainder to the BJP—a final decision on the Chief Minister is pending a meeting in Delhi with top BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah. The Shinde faction, however, insists it will continue to advocate for its leader.
