**Hyderabad, India –** Andhra Pradesh Police are on a nationwide manhunt for film director Ram Gopal Varma after he failed to appear for questioning regarding alleged offensive social media posts targeting Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. Three police teams – two in Hyderabad and one in Tamil Nadu – are searching for Varma, whose phone is currently switched off.
Varma was summoned for investigation on November 25th after being given an extension until that date. He had previously been notified twice. While his lawyer claimed he was willing to participate in a virtual interrogation citing the new Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) law, police rejected this, stating his physical presence was required. The lawyer also maintained that Varma committed no crime.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Ramalingam, alleging that Varma’s social media posts, which included allegedly morphed and indecent photographs of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and their families, damaged their reputations. The police are investigating the timing of the alleged offenses.
Despite Varma claiming on Twitter to be in Coimbatore, police teams are searching multiple locations, including his Hyderabad residence and Film Nagar, coordinating with Tamil Nadu authorities. Prakasam district Superintendent of Police A R Damodar stated that Varma’s absence for the second time constitutes a legal issue, and the police will proceed accordingly.
