Tue Nov 26 05:35:15 UTC 2024: ## Ambedkar Opposed Article 370, Says Union Minister

**New Delhi:** Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has stated that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a key figure in the drafting of the Indian Constitution, opposed the grant of special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Meghwal asserted that Ambedkar believed Article 370, which granted this special status, was detrimental to the unity and integrity of India.

Speaking at an event in Delhi titled “The Indian Constitution for Students,” the Minister claimed Article 370 was hastily passed by the Constituent Assembly in Ambedkar’s absence. He highlighted Ambedkar’s significant contributions to the constitutional debates, noting his extensive participation and record of speaking extensively on various provisions. However, Meghwal stated that Ambedkar opposed Article 370, while crediting Jawaharlal Nehru with pushing for its inclusion and assigning responsibility for its passage to another member of the drafting committee during Ambedkar’s absence due to illness.

Meghwal lauded Ambedkar as a true patriot. The Minister’s statement comes amidst ongoing debates surrounding the revocation of Article 370.
