VAN HORN, Texas – Emily Calandrelli, an MIT-trained engineer and science communicator, has made history as the 100th woman to reach space. Calandrelli, also a Blue Origin astronaut and Emmy-nominated TV host, completed the journey aboard Blue Origin’s latest human spaceflight.
Calandrelli’s passion for space began in childhood and propelled her to earn a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from West Virginia University and a master’s in Aeronautics and Astronautics, along with Technology and Policy, from MIT. Beyond her engineering background, Calandrelli is a prolific science communicator, hosting and co-executive producing the Netflix show *Emily’s Wonder Lab*, appearing as a correspondent on Netflix’s *Bill Nye Saves the World*, and executive producing and hosting FOX’s *Xploration Outer Space*. She’s also a regular contributor to TechCrunch and the author of several books, including the New York Times bestseller *Stay Curious And Keep Exploring* and the children’s series *Ada Lace Adventures*.
Calandrelli is a strong advocate for women and minorities in STEM fields, actively working to increase inclusivity and accessibility in these areas.
Following her spaceflight, Calandrelli faced online harassment, with critics targeting her emotional reaction to reaching the Karman line. Blue Origin responded by removing and re-posting an edited version of the video showcasing her experience. However, Calandrelli has chosen to focus on the positive impact of her journey, stating that she refuses to give attention to online negativity. A representative for Calandrelli confirmed this stance to CNN, emphasizing her desire to concentrate on the positive aspects of her historic achievement.
