Mon Nov 25 22:10:00 UTC 2024: ## French Court Demands 20-Year Sentence for Man Who Orchestrated Wife’s Rape by Dozens

**Avignon, France –** French prosecutors on Monday demanded a 20-year prison sentence for Dominique Pelicot, a 71-year-old man accused of drugging and arranging for dozens of strangers to rape his wife over a decade. The trial, which began in September, has captivated France and sparked widespread protests against violence against women.

Pelicot admitted to drugging his wife, Gisele, with anti-anxiety medication from 2011 to 2020 and recruiting 49 men online to rape and abuse her. He documented the crimes with photos and videos, which were discovered by police following an unrelated incident. The case has led to intense public debate and demonstrations across France.

Prosecutors argued the trial should mark a turning point in societal attitudes towards male violence. While acknowledging the severity of the crimes, they also emphasized the importance of the case in changing the relationship between men and women. The prosecution specifically highlighted the fact that the absence of consent cannot be ignored by the defendants, stating that in 2024, the excuse “Since she said nothing, she agreed” is no longer acceptable.

The prosecution also requested varying prison sentences for the other defendants, ranging from four to 17 years, depending on their level of involvement. Many of the accused claimed they believed they were participating in a consensual act, a defense rejected by the court’s expert psychological reports.

Gisele Pelicot, who has become a feminist icon, insisted on a public trial, allowing evidence, including thousands of photos and videos, to be presented. Her courage and dignity were praised by the prosecution. Prime Minister Michel Barnier also described the trial as a turning point in the country’s efforts to combat violence against women.

Sentencing is expected by December 20. The trial’s impact on French society and the fight against gender-based violence is expected to be significant.
