Tue Nov 26 07:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Huawei to Launch Mate 70 with Homegrown HarmonyOS, Signaling Tech Decoupling from US

**SHENZHEN, CHINA – November 25, 2024** – Chinese tech giant Huawei is poised to launch its new flagship smartphone, the Mate 70, tomorrow, November 26th. The device will be a significant milestone, marking the debut of Huawei’s fully independent operating system, HarmonyOS Next, often referred to as “pure-blood HarmonyOS.” This represents the first domestically developed mobile operating system in China and is widely seen as a further indication of the growing technological decoupling between the US and China.

The Financial Times reported today that the Mate 70 will run entirely on Huawei’s own applications and OS, signifying a major step towards establishing a self-sufficient technological ecosystem independent of US technology. Huawei aims to position HarmonyOS Next as a third major mobile operating system, rivalling Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.

To support the launch, Huawei has reportedly invested heavily in training developers since December 2023, offering online and offline courses to help them adapt to the new platform. A Huawei sales representative, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the company is providing extensive support to developers to ensure a smooth transition.

However, launching a phone with a still-developing ecosystem is a significant gamble for Huawei. Success hinges on attracting a large user base willing to overlook any potential shortcomings and incentivizing app developers to rapidly build out the platform’s capabilities.
