Mon Nov 25 22:01:13 UTC 2024: **Mangalore Woman Duped of Gold Bangles Worth ₹50,000 in Modi Scheme Scam**
Mangalore, Nov 22: A woman, Leela, has filed a complaint with the Surathkal police station after being conned out of a gold bangle worth ₹50,000 by a man who falsely claimed it was part of a Modi government scheme.
The incident occurred on November 21st afternoon when Leela was returning home from the Mukka Satya Dharma Temple. An unknown man, described as approximately 40 years old, wearing a blue t-shirt and blue pants, and speaking in Tulu, approached her.
He introduced himself as a relative (son of her daughter’s maternal uncle) and claimed that under a Modi scheme, she could receive ₹100,000 by depositing ₹6,000 in a bank, claiming it was the last day for the scheme. Since Leela did not have the cash, the man convinced her to give him her gold bangle, which he said he would pawn to raise the ₹6,000, deposit it in the bank, and then return with the ₹100,000 and redeem the bangle. He further claimed to work at the Mukka Corporation Bank, asking her to wait near the bank.
Believing his story, Leela handed over her gold bangle, weighing approximately one “pavan” (about 8 grams). She later realised she had been duped and lodged a complaint with the Surathkal police, who have registered a case and launched an investigation.
