Tue Nov 26 05:48:16 UTC 2024: ## India Celebrates 75 Years of its Constitution with Special Event

**New Delhi, India** – India is commemorating the 75th anniversary of its Constitution with a special event held Tuesday at the Central Hall of the old Parliament House. The ceremony features prominent figures including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, along with all Members of Parliament.

President Murmu and Vice President Dhankhar will address both houses of Parliament. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will deliver the welcome address. A commemorative coin and postage stamp will be released to mark the 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption. The event will also include the launch of two books, “Making of the Indian Constitution: A Glimpse” and “Making of the Indian Constitution and its Glorious Journey,” and the release of copies of the Constitution in Sanskrit and Maithili. A short film highlighting the historical significance and journey of the Indian Constitution’s creation will also be shown.

The Constitution was originally adopted on November 26, 1949, but came into effect on January 26, 1950. The choice of January 26th commemorates the declaration of Purna Swaraj (complete independence) by the Indian National Congress in 1930. November 26th is now celebrated annually as Constitution Day.

The event also highlighted the meticulous work of Prem Behari, the calligrapher who hand-wrote the original English copy of the Constitution, a task that took him six months and used up 432 nibs. The original document is a work of art, featuring illustrations by a team led by Nandalal Bose of Santiniketan, including depictions of figures ranging from Ram and Sita to Akbar and Tipu Sultan. The Hindi version, penned by calligrapher Vasant Krishna Vaidya, weighs 14 kilograms and comprises 264 pages on handmade paper. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is widely credited as the architect of the Constitution for his role as chairman of the drafting committee.
