Mon Nov 25 18:14:40 UTC 2024: ## NASA Launches Rescue Mission for Sunita Williams Aboard ISS

**Houston, TX –** NASA has launched an uncrewed cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) carrying vital supplies, addressing concerns regarding the health of astronaut Sunita Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore. The two astronauts have been aboard the ISS since June 5th, 2024, on a mission extended from its initial 8 days due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Their prolonged stay has raised concerns about their health, particularly after a recent photo showed a significant weight loss.

The Progress spacecraft, launched Thursday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, is carrying three tons of food, fuel, and other essential supplies, addressing reports of a food shortage on the ISS. The spacecraft is expected to dock with the ISS on Saturday.

While NASA maintains that all astronauts are under regular medical supervision and are currently in good health, the prolonged time in space presents health risks. Extended space travel can weaken bones and muscles, cause the destruction of red blood cells, and increase the risk of eye damage due to radiation.

Williams and Wilmore’s mission was initially slated to last eight days but extended to approximately eight months due to technical issues. They are now scheduled to return to Earth in February 2025 aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, along with two other astronauts. The prompt supply mission underscores the challenges and risks associated with long-duration space missions.
