**New Delhi, November 25, 2024** – The Narsapur crochet lace craft has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, offering a lifeline to thousands of women artisans in Andhra Pradesh. West Godavari District Collector Ch. Nagarani received the certificate from Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh at the GI & Beyond 2024 Summit in New Delhi.

The GI tag, registered in March 2024 by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), recognizes the unique craftsmanship of the crochet lace produced in 19 mandals across West Godavari and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema districts. An estimated 15,000 women rely on this craft for their livelihood, primarily in the towns of Narsapur, Palacole, Razole, and Amalapuram.

Collector Nagarani stated that the GI tag will significantly boost the trade and facilitate further research into the craft, helping to preserve this valuable tradition. The initiative is expected to revitalize the struggling industry and secure the economic future of the involved artisans.
