**Bengaluru, November 25, 2024** – Teach For India (TFI), part of the global Teach For All network, received a record-breaking 20,000 applications for its 2024 cohort, highlighting a surprising trend of Gen Z’s growing interest in teaching. Wendy Kopp, co-founder and CEO of Teach For All, recently visited India and spoke with *The Hindu* about this surge in applications and the challenges and opportunities facing the education sector.
Kopp emphasized that while there are global concerns about Gen Z’s interest in teaching, TFI’s high application numbers demonstrate a potential counter-trend. She attributed the appeal of TFI to several factors: the opportunity to make a significant impact immediately after college, the chance to lead a classroom and influence students’ lives, the appeal of joining a like-minded movement, and the significant leadership development opportunities offered.
Kopp highlighted the unique role of TFI within the Teach For All network, stating that its ambitious vision and impactful work have served as inspiration for other organizations. While acknowledging the similarities in challenges faced by marginalized students globally, she emphasized the importance of a global network to foster learning and collaboration among educators.
Kopp discussed the opportunities for TFI fellows to engage with the broader Teach For All network, learning from international best practices. While stressing the importance of local leadership in transforming education systems, she noted that cross-border collaboration accelerates progress.
Finally, Kopp addressed the engagement of Gen Z, noting their strong commitment to values like diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability. She emphasized the need for creating an enabling environment that allows young people to tackle societal challenges through meaningful careers, like teaching. TFI, she explained, aims to provide such an environment, attracting ambitious young leaders to address the critical needs of India’s education system.
