Mon Nov 25 07:29:43 UTC 2024: **Four Killed in Sambhal Mosque Survey Violence; Internet Suspended**
SAMBHAL, Uttar Pradesh—At least four people have died following violence that erupted during a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. The violence, which led to the deaths of three men on Sunday and one more on Monday morning, has prompted a heavy police response and a shutdown of internet services in the area.
Police have arrested 25 people, including two women, and registered four FIRs in connection with the incident. Authorities have indicated that those found guilty will face action under the National Security Act (NSA). The situation, though currently under control with additional police deployed from neighboring districts, remains tense. Shops remain largely closed, reflecting the impact of the violence on the local economy.
Initial reports suggested that not all deaths were caused by police gunfire; some victims appear to have been killed by gunfire from pistols. Investigations into the exact cause of each death are underway.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and political reactions. MP Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the police for not consulting the mosque committee before the survey, calling the deaths “murder.” Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh alleged the violence was BJP-sponsored. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari expressed concern about the police response, and other politicians from various parties offered varying opinions and called for investigations.
Police have reported that approximately 20 police personnel were injured during the stone-pelting that accompanied the violence. Local MP Ziaur Rahman Bark and the son of the local MLA, Suhail Iqbal, are named in FIRs filed for allegedly inciting the riot. The police also seized videos believed to show incitement of violence. The UP police are on high alert following the incident, with instructions issued for heightened vigilance, increased patrolling, and monitoring of social media.
Despite the restoration of calm, the market remains largely shut down, demonstrating the ongoing impact of the violence on daily life and local businesses. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak stated that the survey was conducted based on court orders and that impartial action will be taken, while DIG Muniraj G confirmed that the situation is currently peaceful, with the internet suspension expected to be lifted soon.
