Mon Nov 25 04:09:09 UTC 2024: ## Sambhal Mosque Survey Turns Violent: Three Dead, Internet Suspended
**Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh:** Following violent clashes that erupted during a mosque survey in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, the district is under heavy police presence. Three young men – Naim and Bilal among them – died in the violence. At least 20 police officers were injured in the stone-pelting that ensued.
In response to the unrest, authorities have implemented a 24-hour internet shutdown and closed schools and colleges. Police have detained 21 individuals, including two women. Security has been heightened in neighboring districts, including Bareilly, Amroha, Rampur, and Moradabad.
The family of Bilal, one of the deceased, alleges that he was shot while trying to close his shop after hearing about the clashes. They are demanding action against the responsible police officers. Authorities have warned of National Security Act (NSA) action against those found guilty.
Political reactions have been swift. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav called for a Supreme Court inquiry into the incident, alleging a conspiracy to create tension under the guise of a survey. Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani blamed the state government and administration, alleging that the police fired on the Muslim youth without attempting de-escalation, and that the survey was conducted hastily and without prior consultation with the Muslim community. Arshad Madni also commented, expressing similar concerns.
The situation is currently under control, with a massive police presence deployed throughout Sambhal. However, the incident highlights growing tensions and concerns about religious harmony in the region. A parliamentarian is scheduled to visit the families of the deceased to offer condolences. A social media post by a Bhimsena Army official has also raised further concerns of possible future unrest.
