Mon Nov 25 00:23:23 UTC 2024: ## Sambhal Jama Masjid Survey Turns Violent: Three Dead, Several Injured
**Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh:** A court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, descended into violence on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to several others, including police personnel. The incident sparked widespread condemnation and accusations of instigation.
The survey, conducted following a legal challenge claiming the mosque was built on the site of a demolished Harihar temple, was met with resistance from a large crowd gathered outside the mosque. The crowd pelted stones at the survey team and police, setting fire to police vehicles and several private cars. Numerous houses in the area were also damaged.
Police have detained at least 15 individuals in connection with the violence. While the exact cause of the deaths is still under investigation (post-mortem reports are pending), police confirmed the deaths and stated that those involved in the violence will face action. The Murabad Commissioner, Anjaney Kumar, stated that the survey was conducted with the Imam’s consent and that anyone involved in the violence, regardless of religious affiliation, would be prosecuted.
The aftermath saw a heavy police presence deployed to restore order, with reports indicating that the situation is now under control. However, sporadic incidents of stone-throwing continued into the day. Reinforcements were brought in from neighboring districts of Bareilly, Amroha, and Rampur.
The incident has ignited a political firestorm, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav accusing the government of deliberately instigating the violence. Conversely, Hindu party advocates expressed fears that evidence supporting their claim might be destroyed. Statements from various political figures and religious leaders added fuel to the already tense atmosphere, with some condoning the violence while others called for calm and restraint.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate issued a notice warning of strict action against anyone found possessing stones, flammable materials, or other potentially harmful items on their property. A ban on the sale of bricks and gravel has also been imposed.
This incident highlights the deeply sensitive religious and political context surrounding the Shahi Jama Masjid and underscores the ongoing tensions in the region. The investigation is continuing, and further arrests are expected.
