**NEW YORK** – Norah O’Donnell will depart her role as anchor of the “CBS Evening News” on January 24th, CBS News announced Friday. The move paves the way for a significant revamp of the long-running news program, which will adopt a new multi-anchor format beginning January 27th.
O’Donnell, who has anchored the newscast since 2019, will transition to a senior correspondent position, contributing special reports and conducting high-profile interviews. She will remain with CBS News, contributing to “Evening News,” “60 Minutes,” and other programs. This new role is part of a longer-term agreement between O’Donnell and the network.
The revamped “CBS Evening News,” originating from New York, will feature a team of correspondents rather than a single anchor. John Dickerson, Maurice DuBois, Lonnie Quinn, and Margaret Brennan will be among those leading the broadcast, under the executive production of Bill Owens, who also oversees “60 Minutes.” Owens aims to create a newscast with in-depth reporting and breaking news coverage, rather than a rapid-fire summary of the day’s headlines.
O’Donnell’s tenure at “CBS Evening News” included notable achievements, such as conducting interviews with Pope Francis and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. She also spearheaded investigations into sexual harassment and abuse within the military. Despite these accomplishments, the “CBS Evening News” has consistently trailed ABC’s “World News Tonight” and NBC’s “Nightly News” in the ratings for decades, prompting frequent changes in anchor personnel.
