Mon Nov 25 06:21:15 UTC 2024: ## Leftist Candidate Orsi Wins Uruguayan Presidential Election

**Montevideo, Uruguay** – Left-wing candidate Yamandu Orsi has won the Uruguayan presidential election, defeating Alvaro Delgado of the National Party in a closely contested runoff, according to official results released Sunday. Orsi, representing the Frente Amplio (Broad Front) coalition, secured 49.8% of the vote compared to Delgado’s 45.9%.

The victory marks a shift in Uruguay’s political landscape after five years of center-right rule under President Luis Lacalle Pou. Orsi, seen as a protégé of former President José Mujica, campaigned on a platform of national dialogue and economic growth, while also pledging to address concerns about rising crime linked to drug trafficking. While promising change, Orsi emphasized that his approach would not be radical.

Delgado conceded defeat, offering his congratulations to Orsi. Analysts predict that while the election will shift the balance of power, Uruguay’s overall economic direction is unlikely to undergo massive changes.

Orsi’s win was celebrated in Montevideo, a stronghold of Frente Amplio support. His campaign received a boost from Mujica, a popular former president known for his modest lifestyle.

The election saw a high voter turnout, reflecting Uruguay’s status as one of Latin America’s most stable democracies. While the Frente Amplio will hold a majority in the Senate, they will be in the minority in the Chamber of Representatives following October’s legislative elections.

Orsi’s victory returns the Frente Amplio to power after their 2020 defeat. During their previous tenure (2005-2020), Uruguay saw significant social reforms, including the legalization of abortion and same-sex marriage, and became the first country to legalize recreational cannabis use. Concerns about rising crime and high taxes contributed to their loss in 2020.

International leaders from across Latin America, including Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum, and Chile’s Gabriel Boric, offered their congratulations to Orsi. Outgoing President Pou stated that he would facilitate a smooth transition of power.
