Sun Nov 24 20:10:00 UTC 2024: **Kennesaw State Owls Upset FIU Panthers in Thrilling 27-26 Victory**

KENNESAW, GA — Kennesaw State University’s interim head coach, Chandler Burks, led the Owls to a stunning 27-26 victory over the Florida International University Panthers on Saturday at Fifth Third Stadium. The win marks a remarkable comeback for KSU, who rallied from a ten-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

The Owls’ defense, which struggled in the first half, allowing 319 yards and 20 points, completely turned the tide in the second half, holding FIU to just 81 yards and six points while forcing two crucial turnovers. A key sack and fumble recovery by KSU set up the game-winning drive, culminating in a 19-yard field goal by Austin Welch with just 1:04 remaining. An interception by JeRico Washington Jr. sealed the victory.

The win is particularly significant given the recent turmoil surrounding the dismissal of former head coach Brian Bohannon. Burks, the program’s first recruit and former star quarterback, becomes only the second interim coach in Owls history to secure a win. At 28, he’s also one of the youngest FBS head coaches to achieve this feat. Players praised Burks’ leadership and unwavering support during a challenging time.

KSU quarterback Davis Bryson had an outstanding performance, completing 17 of 29 passes for 185 yards and rushing for 45 yards and two touchdowns. FIU quarterback Keyone Jenkins threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome KSU’s late-game surge.

Despite the victory, the Owls face an uncertain future. Over two dozen players have entered the transfer portal since Bohannon’s departure, and the program’s stability remains in question. The upcoming game against Louisiana Tech will be crucial, and Burks’ performance may significantly influence his future with the team. The weather for the game was reported as partly cloudy with a low of 41°F and southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph.
