Sun Nov 24 21:56:18 UTC 2024: ## Kolkata Knight Riders Splurge ₹23.75 Crore on Venkatesh Iyer in IPL Auction

**Mumbai, India** – The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made a dramatic splash at the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction, securing Venkatesh Iyer for a staggering ₹23.75 crore, the fourth-highest bid in IPL history. The bidding war with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ultimately saw KKR significantly exceed Iyer’s base price of ₹2 crore.

The purchase has drawn criticism, however. Former KKR captain Eoin Morgan expressed surprise at the price, stating it was “massive over” considering Iyer’s performance compared to other players like KL Rahul, who was bought for ₹14 crore. Morgan acknowledged Iyer’s talent but questioned the value in the context of the auction.

Besides Iyer, KKR also acquired Quinton de Kock (₹3.6 crore), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (₹2 crore), Anrich Nortje (₹6.5 crore), and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (₹3 crore). The team retained several key players including Rinku Singh (₹13 crore), Andre Russell (₹12 crore), Sunil Narine (₹12 crore), and Varun Chakaravarthy (₹12 crore).

The unexpected high bid for Iyer highlights the intense competition and strategic maneuvering within the IPL auction, leaving some analysts questioning whether KKR overpaid for the all-rounder. The team will hope Iyer’s performance justifies the substantial investment.
