Sun Nov 24 20:15:10 UTC 2024: ## Iyer Ready to Captain KKR After Record-Breaking IPL Auction

**Jeddah, Saudi Arabia –** Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has expressed his readiness to captain the team in IPL 2025 following his record-breaking auction performance. Iyer was purchased for a staggering ₹23.75 crore (approximately $2.8 million USD), making him the third most expensive player on Day 1 of the IPL 2025 mega auction. This massive bid comes amid speculation that he will replace Shreyas Iyer as captain, especially given KKR’s failure to retain Shreyas in the auction.

Iyer, who played a crucial role in KKR’s 2024 title win, told JioCinema that while captaincy is “just a tag,” he’s ready to lead and foster a collaborative team environment. His experience as vice-captain and stand-in captain in the past makes him a strong candidate. His all-round skills, including improved bowling, and his involvement in team strategy further enhance his suitability for the role.

The high price tag reflects Iyer’s growing stature in the IPL. He has played 51 matches for KKR, scoring 1326 runs, including a century in 2023. His impressive strike rate of 158 in KKR’s championship run solidified his value. With former Madhya Pradesh coach Chandrakant Pandit now leading the KKR coaching staff, Iyer’s appointment seems increasingly possible.

KKR’s spending spree on Day 1 also included the acquisitions of Anrich Nortje (₹6.5 crore), Quinton de Kock (₹3.6 crore), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (₹3 crore), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (₹2 crore), and Vaibhav Arora (₹1.8 crore). However, the team was unable to retain key players Shreyas Iyer and Phil Salt, adding to the anticipation surrounding Iyer’s potential captaincy.
