Mon Nov 25 05:37:30 UTC 2024: ## Four Dead in Uttar Pradesh Mosque Survey Violence

**Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, India** – Violent clashes erupted in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, leaving four people dead and at least 20 police officers injured following a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid. The survey, stemming from a legal dispute claiming the mosque was built on the site of a Hindu temple, sparked protests that quickly escalated into violence.

Protesters set vehicles ablaze, pelted police with stones, and clashed with law enforcement who responded with tear gas and batons. Two of the fatalities resulted from gunshot wounds, while the cause of death for a third victim is pending a post-mortem examination. Twenty-one individuals, including three women, have been detained, and authorities plan to charge those involved under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

In the aftermath, internet services have been suspended in Sambhal tehsil for 24 hours, and schools have been closed. The district administration has also barred outsiders from entering Sambhal until November 30th. The survey itself, however, was completed as planned, with the report due November 29th.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi condemned the state government’s handling of the situation, calling it biased and hasty. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav urged the Supreme Court to intervene, while Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai blamed the ruling BJP government for the escalating violence.

The BJP, however, defended the actions, stating that those who disagree with court orders should pursue legal avenues and that the law will be enforced. The legal battle surrounding the mosque’s origins continues, with one lawyer for the Hindu side claiming the temple was demolished by Mughal Emperor Babur in 1529. The survey’s supporters maintain it’s a necessary step to uncover historical truth, while critics argue it violates the sanctity of religious places.
