**KOCHI, INDIA (November 25, 2024)** – A heritage walk held in Ernakulam on Sunday, as part of World Heritage Week, illuminated the evolution of Kochi from a small coastal town to a globally recognized port city. Organized by The Kochi Heritage Project and the Ernakulam Karayogam, the walk attracted participants from diverse backgrounds, including academics.
Led by Johann Binny Kuruvilla, founder of The Kochi Heritage Project, the tour explored Ernakulam’s rise as a bustling trade hub, connecting Kerala’s hinterlands to the Arabian Sea. The arrival of the railways in the late 19th century significantly impacted the region, shifting focus to Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, and contributing to their development as cosmopolitan centers. The walk highlighted the role of these developments, along with the contributions of various communities, including the Jewish community, in shaping Kochi’s identity.
Participants visited key historical sites, including the Ernakulathappan Temple, places of worship, remnants of once-navigable canals, and the Shornur-Ernakulam railway line, established during the reign of Sri Rama Varma. The tour concluded by showcasing Kochi’s modern infrastructure, such as the 27-km metro-rail network, a testament to its continued growth and development. The walk successfully demonstrated how Kochi’s vibrant past, trade networks, and key historical events have shaped the dynamic city it is today.
