**NEW DELHI –** India observed Constitution Day, or Samvidhan Divas, on November 26th, commemorating the adoption of its Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. Established in 2015 to coincide with the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chairman of the Drafting Committee, the day serves as a tribute to the framers of the document and the values it enshrines.
The Constitution, the longest written constitution in the world, took nearly three years to draft and was presented by Dr. Ambedkar to the Constituent Assembly, headed by Dr. Rajendra Prasad. It officially came into effect on January 26, 1950, now celebrated as Republic Day.
Samvidhan Divas emphasizes the Constitution’s significance as a cornerstone of India’s democratic republic, securing justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all citizens. The day honors the work of the 271 members of the Constituent Assembly, whose efforts laid the foundation for a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic nation, marking a powerful end to centuries of discrimination and exclusion. The celebration serves as a reminder of the Constitution’s role in shaping modern India and its ongoing relevance in safeguarding democratic values.
