Mon Nov 25 00:40:00 UTC 2024: ## British Teenager Faces 20 Years in Dubai Prison Over Consensual Relationship

**Dubai, UAE –** An 18-year-old British man is facing a potential 20-year prison sentence in Dubai for having a consensual sexual relationship with a then-17-year-old British girl during a holiday in the emirate. The case, highlighted by the human rights campaign group Detained in Dubai, has sparked outrage due to the stark contrast between the UAE’s laws and those of the UK.

Marcus Fakana, from Tottenham, London, began a relationship with the girl, also a Londoner, in September. After returning to the UK, the girl’s mother reported the relationship to Dubai police, leading to Fakana’s arrest upon his return to Dubai. Both individuals are now 18 years old.

Radha Stirling of Detained in Dubai, who is assisting Fakana and his family, emphasizes that the relationship was consensual and that the age difference is minimal. She criticized the lack of clear warnings from the UK government regarding the UAE’s strict laws on extramarital sex, particularly involving minors. The FCDO website, she argued, doesn’t adequately detail the potential legal ramifications for British citizens in the UAE.

Fakana’s parents, who work as a cleaner and warehouse worker, are reportedly distraught and have returned to London without their son to resume their jobs. Detained in Dubai has contacted Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who is also Fakana’s MP, for assistance.

A UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) spokesperson confirmed they are supporting the British national and are in contact with his family. The UAE’s London embassy has been approached for comment. The case highlights concerns about the potential pitfalls for British tourists in the UAE and the need for clearer and more comprehensive travel advice.
