Mon Nov 25 06:06:34 UTC 2024: ## Home Remains Deadliest Place for Women: UN Report

**Rome, Italy –** A new report released by UN Women and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime reveals that the home remains the most dangerous place for women and girls. On average, 140 women and girls were killed daily last year by an intimate partner or family member.

The report, published on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, indicates an estimated 51,100 women and girls were killed by intimate partners or family members in 2023 – a slight increase from 2022. This increase, however, is largely attributed to improved data collection rather than a rise in killings.

Africa recorded the highest number of such killings (21,700), with the highest rate per capita (2.9 victims per 100,000 people). The Americas and Oceania also showed high rates (1.6 and 1.5 per 100,000 respectively), while Asia and Europe had significantly lower rates.

While men constitute the vast majority of homicide victims globally (80% in 2023), the report highlights the disproportionate impact of intimate partner/family violence on women. Nearly 60% of all women intentionally killed in 2023 were victims of such violence. The report emphasizes that these killings are often the culmination of repeated gender-based violence and are preventable with timely interventions. Despite ongoing efforts, the UN agencies stress that the alarmingly high levels of violence against women remain a significant concern.
