**New Delhi, November 25, 2024** – Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal asserted today that B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, opposed granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir, viewing it as detrimental to the nation’s unity and integrity.
Speaking at a book launch, Mr. Meghwal claimed that Ambedkar refused to pilot Article 370, which conferred special status on J&K, citing its incompatibility with national unity. He further alleged that the article was passed hastily in the Constituent Assembly while Ambedkar was absent due to illness. The Minister cited Constituent Assembly records, highlighting Ambedkar’s active participation in debates on other articles, contrasting it with his refusal to handle Article 370. He attributed the article’s passage to the insistence of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, necessitating another member of the drafting committee to take on the responsibility.
Mr. Meghwal lauded both Ambedkar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as patriots, emphasizing Ambedkar’s opposition to Article 370 and Modi’s role in its revocation.
